The 2014 Derby Prep Season is already ten races into the schedule, but Saturday’s Sham Stakes will restart the action after the holiday break. The last race was held back on December 15th when Todd Pletcher’s Violence won the Cash Call Futurity at Hollywood Park. This Saturday marks the 13th Sham Stakes, which was named for the fantastic Sham, a thoroughbred that won the Santa Anita Derby in 1973 and served as a rival for Triple Crown winner Secretariat, as he finished second in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes.

Bob Baffert has won the one mile Sham Stakes twice in his illustrious career. He took the inaugural race in 2001 with Wild and Wise and then won again in 2006 with Bob and John. This year Baffert has two of his prize three-year-olds running as he entered Den’s Legacy and Manando in the grade III outing at Santa Anita. Den’s Legacy already has quite a bit of seasoning as he ran eight times in 2012 with a victory in the Generous Stakes and a second place finish in the Cash Call Futurity. He should be one of the favorites going into the race along with Doug O’Neill’s Goldencents. Goldencents is in the Top 5 and is currently second in the Derby Championship Series point standings behind Shanghai Bobby. Goldencents has three races behind him, most recently winning the Delta Downs Jackpot in mid-November. O’Neill has also entered Greeley Awesome who won a claiming race at Hollywood Park in November with Mario Gutierrez aboard.

The Sham Stakes will be followed on the “Road to the Kentucky Derby” in two weeks when the Lecomte Stakes goes off on January 19th and then the pace picks up as the month ends with the Smarty Jones Stakes on the 21st and the Holy Bull Stakes on the 26th. will be with you every step of the way as new contenders emerge in what should be a great schedule leading up to the Kentucky Derby!
