There is no doubt about it now, two-year-old sensation Shanghai Bobby will be participating in the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile next month at Santa Anita Park. The colt had a fantastic showing on October 6th, winning the Grade I Champagne Stakes at Belmont by five lengths. Last year’s Champagne winner, Union Rags went on to the Breeders’ Cup, where he was just beaten by Eclipse award winner Hansen. The victory for Shanghai Bobby came over a six horse field and he was running at a mile for the first time in his career. Trainer Todd Pletcher was enthusiastic about his horse after the race; “He’s tenacious. He has all of the tools. The one thing we felt Shanghai Bobby had going for him coming into the race was seasoning.”{1}

Shanghai Bobby is trained by Pletcher and claims Storm Cat and the great Affirmed as part of his lineage. With the win in the Champagne Stakes, the colt was awarded 10 points in the new “Road to the Kentucky Derby” format that will award spots in the Derby to horses based on points in various races instead of on earnings, which was done in the past. You can learn more about the “Road to the Kentucky Derby” point system here; The Road to the Kentucky Derby . Shanghai Bobby has now won four consecutive races to start his career, with the last two wins being graded stakes victories, as he took the Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga in early September.

The dark brown colt already has over $600,000 in winnings and holds the top spot in rankings of the top two-year-old Kentucky Derby contenders list. There are still races to be run in the division, but Shanghai Bobby looks to be an early contender for two-year-old male of the year.
