Sunday’s Sanford Stakes at Saratoga Race Course saw the emergence of another Repole/Pletcher 2-year-old powerhouse as Overdriven attained a four-length victory over the field in the Grade II $150,000 contest for two-year olds. Overdriven was heavily favored at 1-4 and finished ahead of Power World and Jack’s in the Deck respectively.
The last Repole/Pletcher 2-year-old powerhouse was last year’s two-year old champion and early Kentucky Derby favorite, Uncle Mo. Overdriven is already drawing comparisons to Uncle Mo, though possibly a bit premature. Pletcher was quick to nip the comparisons in the bud and let the horses stand on their own while calling the win a “professional performance.”
Overdriven was ridden by John Velazquez who noticed that the horse slacked off a bit once he had taken the lead but only needed to see the whip to refocus. He covered six furlongs in 1:10.60 on the fast track. The win marks Velazquez’s sixth victory in the Sanford and Pletcher’s fifth.
