In the first Kentucky Derby prep race of the year at Santa Anita, Out of Bounds rallied down the stretch to take the Sham Stakes and upset heavy favorite Secret Circle.
Out of Bounds started out of the first post position trailing Longview Drive and Secret Circle along the rail as they approached the stretch. Jockey Garrett Gomez took Out of Bounds off the rail and challenged as Secret Circle and Longview Drive dueled. He remained just behind the leaders until the final furlong when he moved ahead, winning by half a length while pulling away. The victory marked the fourth consecutive stakes race win at Santa Anita for Garrett Gomez.
Trainer Eoin Harty was encouraged by the victory and feels his horse has made some real strides this year; “He’s a very big horse, but he’s a gentle giant,” Harty said. “He’s come around mentally as well as physically, and sometimes it takes a while for both to catch up.” Harty is no stranger to the Triple Crown chase, as he trained Colonel John, the 2008 winner of the Sham Stakes and a Kentucky Derby favorite. No timetable has been set for Out of Bounds next race, but it’s likely to be the Holy Bull Stakes at Santa Anita on January 29th.
