Del Mar Thoroughbred Club begins its 71st season today and continues its long and storied history as one of the premier horse racing tracks in the world. From its 1937 inaugural season where Bing Crosby greeted the very first visitor at the gates to last year’s record-breaking opening day crowd of 44,907, Del Mar continues to provide a one-of-a-kind atmosphere “Where The Surf Meets The Turf.”
Del Mar consists of a one mile main dirt track and a seven furlong course that is situated so close to the Pacific Ocean that there is nearly always a nice ocean breeze for the visitors to enjoy.
The first race of the day goes off at 2 pm and as usual will begin with Trevor Denman’s unmistakable greeting: “And there’s the roar from the Del Mar crowd as the 2011 Del Mar meet is underway.”
The feature race of opening day is the $100,000 Oceanside Stakes, a turf race for 3-year-olds. The summer meet is a 37-day event highlighted by the $1 million Grade 1 Pacific Classic on August 28th .
