On Monday night, the connections of Zenyatta were presented with the prestigious Eclipse Award for 2010 Horse of the Year by a vote of 128 to 102 over Breeders Cup Classic winner Blame. In the opinion of this writer, the voters for Zenyatta got it all wrong again. There is no doubt that Zenyatta is a fabulous mare who will go down in history as one of the greatest mares and racehorses ever, ending her career with a 19 for 20 record. However, the 2010 campaign of Blame, ending with a head-to-head victory over Zenyatta in the Breeders Cup Classic at Churchill Downs, deserved this year’s Horse of the Year Eclipse award. The fact that Zenyatta had never received a Horse of the Year award likely played into the decision of many Eclipse voters. The fact is that Zenyatta primarily raced inside California’s boundaries throughout 2010, overmatching older females in races dominated by short fields. Blame, on the other hand, faced older males at various racetracks and solidified his resume with his victory in the Breeders Cup Classic. There is no doubt that Zenyatta receiving the Horse of the Year Award is good for racing and will be popular with casual fans, however it doesn’t lessen the blow to the connections of Blame who accomplished their mission of defeating Zenyatta head-to-head.
