Dullahan has had an up and down career to this point for Donegal Racing. In eleven career races prior to this past weekend, the three-year-old closer has produced only two wins and placed third in the Kentucky Derby. On Sunday he ran on the west coast for the first time at Del Mar in the $1 million Pacific Classic, and took home the victory, surging past favorite Game On Dude to set a track record in the 1 ¼ mile contest. Dullahan, with jockey Joel Rosario aboard, ran the race in 1:59.54, more than one second better than Acclamation, who had set the record just last year. This wasn’t the first record setting race for the colt as earlier in the season Dullahan set the track record in the Bluegrass Stakes running down two-year-old champion Hansen to claim the win.
Sunday’s win gives Dale Roman’s colt three career wins, with all of them being grade I contests and all coming on synthetic surfaces. Dullahan is only the fourth three-year-old to win the Pacific Classic, a race that is open to thoroughbreds at three-years an older. Finishing second was Bob Baffert’s four-year-old Game on Dude and third place went to Leandro Mora trained Richard’s Kid. With the win, Dullahan receives an automatic berth in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic that will take place this November at Santa Anita Race Track. It’s not immediately apparent that he will run in that race, but has definitely been pointed towards the next Dubai World Cup in March of 2014.
