For the third consecutive year, Maggie Mae Designs and Old Friends are teaming up to raise money for retired thoroughbreds, some of whom have been rescued from less than ideal situations. Not all former racehorses get a dignified retirement at a plush farm or at stud. Some are simply abandoned to whoever will take them and often that can lead to mistreatment and uneducated care. Old Friends rescues these fine animals who have entertained us and offers them a new lease on life as they regain their health and once again bring joy to us through education and tourism.
Kentucky Derby hats are as much of a tradition at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May as mint juleps and two dollar show bets! Maggie Mae Designs creates beautiful Derby hats, as well as hats for almost any other occasion one can imagine. Each hat is hand crafted by milliner Sally Faith Steinmann, who carefully creates unique, one of a kind items that are both beautiful and personal.
Bidding is now open on the latest hat up for auction. The “Wallenda” (pictured above) is named for one of the horses kept at Old Friends, who was a Kentucky Derby contender in 1993 and won such races as the Pennsylvania Derby and the Super Derby. The bidding for this hat is open until March 11th. For more details on the hate, Old Friends, and Maggie Mae Designs, please visit their websites.
