Creative Cause came into last Saturday’s Grade 1 Norfolk Stakes with a little something to prove. Having won three out of his four starts this year, his only loss was to Drill in the Del Mar Futurity in early September. In that race, Creative Cause was bumped by Majestic City leading to an eventual second place finish. Trainer Mike Harrington believed that his horse would have beaten Drill had it not been for that incident. He got the chance to prove it on Saturday and prove it he did.
Creative Cause not only beat Drill in the rematch but did so in convincing fashion with a 3 1/4 lengths victory robbing Drill’s trainer Bob Baffert of a record sixth victory at the Norfolk Stakes. Creative Cause ran behind pacesetter Ruler of Dubai before rallying in the stretch to take the easy victory and earn a berth as a major contender in the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile at Churchill Downs this November. While the Breeder’s Cup is the main focus for the Creative Cause camp, the 2012 Kentucky Derby is also surely on the radar screen as the horse is garnering horse-of-the-year talk.
Creative Cause was ridden by jockey Joel Rosario and ran a 1:42.66 while paying $5.80, $2.40 and $2.10. The son of Giant’s Causeway now has career earnings over $300,000.
