The CashCall Futurity, the final Grade I race of the year for 2-year-olds, will run this Saturday at Hollywood Park. The Futurity is a $750,000 1 1/16 miles race run on Hollywood Park’s cushion track and will star several Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks possibles. The Futurity has a history of producing future Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown race winners.
One Kentucky Derby possibility that won’t be on display will be the Bob Baffert trained, So Brilliant. So Brilliant is undefeated after winning his first maiden race and then capturing the Hollywood Prevue in late November. Baffert has stated that the horse has an elevated temperature which has caused some concern. But Baffert will still have three other strong candidates running on Saturday in Drill, Sky Kingdom and Liaison. Drill won the Del Mar Futurity (G1) and looked to be the next hottest thing before poor performances in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and the Delta Downs Jackpot. Baffert has been impressed with his recent workouts and looks to right this young colt Saturday at Hollywood Park.
Another recent scratch for Saturday is Graham Motion’s Lucky Chappy. Lucky Chappy finished fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf and third in Keeneland’s Bourbon Stakes. It was discovered that the horse had an elevated temperature on Tuesday and did not ship as planned.
Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer is counting on his Rousing Sermon to make some noise at Saturday’s Futurity. Rousing Sermon recently won the California Cup Juvenile and then came in runner-up to Baffert’s Liaison at Hollywood Park’s Real Quiet. Should Rousing Sermon cross the finish line first, Hollendorfer would become the first trainer to win the CashCall Futurity and the Hollywood Starlet in the same year. His Killer Graces took the Starlet last Saturday. Hollendorfer will also run Longview Drive this Saturday.
Other hopefuls for Saturday include Cozzetti, Majestic City, Empire Way, Basmati, Handsome Mike, Brother Francis, Groovin’ Solo and French import, Desormais. First post on Saturday will be 12:30 p.m.
