We are a week away from celebrating thoroughbred horse racing’s culminating event: the Breeders’ Cup Championships. The Breeders’ Cup returns to Churchill Downs this year and the excitement is continuing to build for what looks to be a spectacular two days of top-tier horse racing. The event has already seen a record number of pre-entries as the number of horses entered reached 193 this past week. While quantity doesn’t always equal quality, there seems to be plenty of quality to go around as well this year.
The Breeders’ Cup Classic remains the top draw of the two-day event and will see an outstanding matchup between Havre de Grace and Uncle Mo. Uncle Mo looks to cap off his comeback year with not only a win, but with Horse of the Year honors to boot. Should he manage to win the Classic, he certainly will deserve whatever accolades come his way after battling back from a liver ailment that kept him out of the Kentucky Derby. Havre de Grace’s supporters think she deserves Horse of the Year whether she wins the Classic or not, however. She comes in as the talk of the town and would be a lock for Horse of the Year should she win. But, even if she doesn’t, she may have done enough already to secure that title. She has finished on the board in every race she has entered, has won 8 out of 14 races with 5 of those being Grade 1 wins, and beat the boys at their own game when she took the Woodward in September.
Apart from the Classic, the Breeders’ Cup Mile is also highly anticipated as Goldikova tries for an unprecedented fourth straight victory. While she has some competition to overcome, the six-year-old mare seems set to pull off yet another win. Union Rags will also be drawing attention as he brings his come-from-behind style into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile to square off against the likes Drill and Creative Cause.
The Breeders’ Cup Championships will run on November 4th and 4th at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. Live coverage can be viewed on ABC and ESPN. Tickets and packages are still available from DerbyDeals.com. Visit the website or call 877-DERBYKY today for the best prices!
